Gun Permits

This web site is only a guide on gun permits for Becker County. We are providing information which answers some of the more common questions received by our staff.

We are not providing any legal advice, nor are we attempting to suggest a course of action if there are legal issues to be resolved. If you need legal advice, please contact an attorney. Our office is not permitted to provide legal advice, nor can we suggest any specific attorney.

All applications must be submitted in person at the Sheriff's Office. Permit application will only be accepted during normal business hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday).

  • Permit to Carry

    Please provide the following:

    • A completed Permit to Carry Application (three signature spots; permits also available to fill out in person)
    • Your driver's license, state identification card, or passport.
    • Your class certificate. The certificate must have been issued within 1 year of your application.
    • $60 MN residents, $100 out of state residents, or $20 current or previous military.
    • Payments must be exact change or a check made out to Becker County.

    Your permit will be processed and mailed out within 30 days.

  • Permit to Purchase

    Please provide the following:

    There is no cost for the Permit to Purchase, your permit will be processed and mailed out within 30 days.

  • Private Party Transfer

    A Minnesota private party selling firearms to a Minnesota private party.

    • The PRIVATE PARTY RECORD OF TRANSFER form only needs to be used when selling a handgun or semi-automatic military firearm such as an AR-15, AK-47, Tactical Shotgun with pistol grip and removable magazines, etc.
    • The form is available on the MN BCA website: Private Party Record of Transfer.
    • If the purchaser has a MN Permit to Purchase or MN Permit to Carry, they do not need to report the transaction to law enforcement.
    • The seller and purchaser should each keep a copy of the completed form.
    • If a Minnesota buyer does not have a Minnesota Permit to Purchase or Minnesota Permit to Carry, the sale needs to be done at a federal firearms license (FFL) business where they will complete Federal Form 4473.
    • Please note many Minnesota brick and mortar businesses require buyers to present a MN Permit to Purchase or MN Permit to Carry to complete a Federal Form 4473, so please check with the FFL you plan to use to see if this is something they require.

  • Updating Your Information

    Individuals looking to change personal information must provide in person the following:

    • A completed Personal Data Change Form
    • Updated driver's license
    • $10 - must be exact change or a check made out to Becker County.
